Clinical Study on Compound Houttuyniae Herba Mixture Combined with Amoxicillin Clavulanate Potassium in Treating Pediatric Acute Upper Respiratory Tract Infection with External Contraction of Wind-Heat Syndrome
Abstract: Objective: To observe the clinical effects of Compound Houttuyniae Herba Mixture combined with Amoxicillin Clavulanate Potassium in the treatment of pediatric acute upper respiratory tract infection with external contraction of wind-heat syndrome. Methods: A total of 98 children diagnosed with acute upper respiratory tract infection with external contraction of wind-heat syndrome, admitted to the Department of Pediatrics of Taizhou Central Hospital/Taizhou University Hospital from August 2023 to September 2025,were retrospectively enrolled and divided into the control group and the combination group according to the treatment regimens, with 49 cases in each group. Both groups received continuous treatment for seven days. The clinical effects, symptom scores of acute upper respiratory tract infection, inflammatory indicators [neutrophil percentage (NEU), C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT)], and incidence of adverse reactions were compared between the two groups. Results: The combination group achieved superior clinical effects compared to the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the scores of cough, nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, and sore throat in both groups were decreased (P<0.05);the scores of cough, nasal congestion, and sore throat in the combination group were lower than those in the control group (P< 0.05). There was no significant difference being found in rhinorrhea score between the two groups (P>0.05). The duration of fever, sore throat, and cough duration in the combination group was shorter than that in the control group (P<0.05). After treatment,NEU,CRP,and PCT levels in both groups declined, and the combination group showed lower levels than the control group, the difference being significant (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in the incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups (P>0.05). Conclusion: Compound Houttuyniae Herba Mixture combined with Amoxicillin Clavulanate Potassium can effectively relieve symptoms, alleviate inflammatory responses, and improve clinical effects in children with acute upper respiratory tract infection of external contraction of wind-heat syndrome, with favorable safety.
