Abstract:Nasopharyngeal carcinoma results from a combination of factors, including Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection, dietary habits, and constitutional predisposition. As the primary contributing factor, EBV infection, with its characteristics of latency, opportunistic onset, and tendency to transform into heat, can be categorized under the concept of latent pathogens in warm disease theory in traditional Chinese medicine. Based on the theory of latent pathogens in warm diseases, this article posits that deficiency of healthy qi and invasion by pathogens constitute the root cause of EBV-induced nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The fundamental nature of the disease is root deficiency with branch excess, accompanied by pathogenic factors such as dampness, heat, toxicity, phlegm, and stasis, ultimately leading to the development of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Accordingly, the basic therapeutic principle of clearing heat and nourishing yin, supporting healthy qi and eliminating pathogens is summarized. By further exploring and applying the concept of latent pathogens in warm diseases, this study aims to provide new perspectives for the differentiation and treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma in traditional Chinese medicine.
